My name is Debra Washburn and I have been teaching for 31 years. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was 8 years old. I have had the opportunity to minister to many children and families over the years. I completed my Bachelor’s Degree at Concordia University in Ann Arbor. I began teaching at Emmanuel Lutheran School in Dearborn, MI. I continued to study at Eastern Michigan University, earning a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Language Arts. In 1999, I began teaching Kindergarten at St. Peter. It has been a blessing to me and to my family to be part of the congregation here at St. Peter.
I am thrilled to share the love of our God with the children I teach daily. It is amazing to hear them proclaim Jesus’ love confidently.
My husband David and I have three daughters. Katy works for 9&10 News in Cadillac, MI. Kristine teaches in River Forest, IL. Kallie is attending Oakland University, studying marketing.
I enjoy watching the Detroit Tigers and playing softball with the Women’s team at St. Peter. David and I are members of the St. Peter Bowling League.
I look forward to a fabulous year of learning and growing with the children in my classroom.
Hi. My name is Nicki Wargo. I spend my days with kindergarten kids as we play and learn more about Jesus, letters, numbers, words, how to use our smart brains, and how to grow as Brothers and Sisters in Christ as we explore the world that He has made for us. This year will be my 6th year of teaching kindergarten, my 10th year of teaching at St. Peter, and my 18th year in the teaching ministry. Throughout the years, I have taught kindergarten – 6th grade in Ohio and Michigan, and have been able to work with kids and adult of all ages through music ministries, youth ministries, Vacation Bible Schools, women’s ministry, drama, and Bible studies. I grew up in this area and attended Immanuel Lutheran and Lutheran High North. I went to college at Concordia University, Chicago where I graduated in Elementary Education with minors in music and Early Childhood Education…and met my husband, Phil, who teaches sixth grade here at St. Peter. I love the opportunity to share Jesus with kids and adults, and seeing the way He is always at work in our lives. I completed my Master’s in the Art of Teaching Reading and Language Arts degree at Marygrove College, and continue to enjoy researching new strategies and ideas to use within the classroom to help each child learn… and love learning. I am blessed to be able to go to St. Peter each day with my husband and twin secondgraders, and to share each day with a class of Brothers and Sisters in Christ as we grow in faith and trust in Jesus, our Best Friend!
Katie Tobey – Kindergarten Paraprofessional
I grew up attending school at St. Luke in Clinton Twp. where I also attended church. I went on to attend and graduate from LHN. I earned a Bachelors of Science from Oakland University in Business Administration. Being a part of the teaching process was never in my plans, until I volunteered in my son’s preschool classroom. The spark was ignited! I truly love and am honored to play a small role in a child’s learning process. Being able to teach of God’s love and Jesus’s salvation brings me such great joy. When my husband and I began looking at schools for our children to attend, St. Peter felt like home to us. Now, as a parent and employee of St. Peter, I am honored and excited to be part of such a fantastic and loving Lutheran school. Go Patriots!!
